Prof. Jian LIN is an internationally renowned geophysicist, has made seminal original contributions to ocean and Earth sciences and critical discoveries in research of mid-ocean ridges, transform faults, subduction zones, and earthquake interaction. He led as chief-scientist and geophysicist in more than twenty international oceanographic expeditions to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, as well as marginal seas, including four ocean drilling expeditions in the South China Sea; the first high-resolution seismic experiment across the deepest ocean basin - Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench; discovery of the first hydrothermal vent systems on the southwest Indian Ridge; and multi-disciplinary study of the Makran Trench in the northern Indian ocean. He had published a series of papers in top international journals such as Nature and Science, one of his earthquake research papers was ranked by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) as the most-cited paper in a decade. Prof. Jian LIN was elected as a Member of Academia Europaea, Fellow of American Geophysical Union (AGU), Fellow of Geological Society of America (GSA), Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); received Henry Bigelow Chair Award for Excellence in Oceanography. He showed exceptional leadership in heading and expanding the InterRidge Program globally and sustained strong leadership in collaboration in Europe, including co-authorship with 55 scientists from 45 institutions in 14 European countries. He conducted several international expeditions on European vessels, led and participated in ODP 184 (1999), IODP 349 (2014), 368 (2017), and 368X (2018) with many European participants. Co-led and participated in expeditions on European research vessels, including R/V Charles Darwin (UK), R/V L’Atalante (France), R/V Theni (Greece). He made exemplary unselfish efforts in advising and mentoring a new generation of young marine scientists, many of them from Europe.
