The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) mourns the loss of Professor Miguel Ángel Alario y Franco, a distinguished fellow of our Academy and a towering figure in the world of science. Professor Alario y Franco was a highly respected scholar, known for his remarkable contributions to the field of solid-state chemistry. His career was marked by excellence in research, teaching, and leadership.
He served as a Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid since 1976, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences from 1986 to 1994, and President of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences from 2009 to 2012. His groundbreaking work earned him numerous accolades, including the Rey Jaime I Award in Materials Science, the Mexico Award for Science and Technology, and the Complutense Medal for Teaching and Research Merit, among many others.
In 2023, Professor Alario y Franco served as the Chairman of the EurASc Symposium in Madrid at Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences, where his enthusiasm and dedication were felt by all participants. His leadership and passion for science were truly inspiring, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.
Professor Alario y Franco’s legacy extends beyond his scientific achievements. He was a mentor, a leader, and a passionate advocate for science and education. His passing is a great loss to the scientific community and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
