Catherine Llorens-Cortes Receives Prestigious Medal for Applications of Science 2023 from the French Academy of Sciences

We are delighted to announce that Catherine Llorens-Cortes, a distinguished member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc), has been awarded the Medal for Applications of Science 2023 by the French Academy of Sciences. This esteemed recognition is a testament to her exceptional contributions in the field of neuropharmacology.

For over two decades, Catherine Llorens-Cortes served as the Director of the Central Laboratory of Neuropeptides and Water and Cardiovascular Regulations at the Collège de France (Inserm U691). In 2011, her laboratory integrated into the Interdisciplinary Center for Research in Biology at CDF (Inserm U1050/CNRS 7241), solidifying her legacy of research and leadership.

Catherine’s groundbreaking work has led to the identification of novel therapeutic targets for conditions such as arterial hypertension, heart failure, and hyponatremia. These discoveries have not only advanced scientific understanding but have also paved the way for the development of various therapeutically relevant molecules.

One standout achievement is Firibastat, the first aminopeptidase A inhibitor to penetrate the brain. This innovative compound has demonstrated the ability to normalize blood pressure in various experimental hypertension models and improve cardiac function in a post-myocardial infarction heart failure model.

Clinical trials post-myocardial infarction have shown that Firibastat prevents left ventricular dysfunction with good blood pressure tolerance, showcasing the practical implications of Catherine Llorens-Cortes’s research in healthcare.

Her discovery of metabolically stable analogs of apelin, such as LIT01-196, suggests a novel approach for treating hyponatremia. Activation of the apelin receptor by this compound represents a promising avenue for addressing this condition.

EurASc supports IPOS, the new International Panel for Ocean Sustainability

EurASc supports IPOS, the new International Panel for Ocean Sustainability

Following the One Ocean Summit, held in Brest (France) in February 2022, to give the ocean a top visibility in the Conference of Parties related to climate change and biodiversity, Françoise Gaill (CNRS) took the initiative to launch IPOS (International Panel for Ocean Sustainability) which is aligned with the ‘United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. IPOS is as a multi-stakeholder international platform bridgingaltogether ocean knowledge holders. To bring about lasting and transformative changes for the future of oceans, IPOS is building a transdisciplinary interface promoting the circulation of knowledge between science, society, and policymakers. 

0n 18-19 April 2023 in Brussels, together with 16 other scientific institutions gathered in a Coalition of Scientific Institutions (CSI), EurASc signed the «Brussels Statement » in support of the creation of IPOS. (See HERE)

The EU’s agenda on International Ocean Governance (2022) encourages the creation of IPOS. The Seascape Assessment report commissioned by DG MARE analyses organizations, both global and European, that provide information about the state of the ocean. (See HERE)

On November 14th, the Consortium of Scientific Institutions supporting IPOS held a visioconference  to share with the IPOS team an update on the IPOS developments of the last months as well as the IPOS team point of view regarding the structure and role of the Coalition of Scientific Institutions (CSI).  

On November 15th 2023 held at the European Parliament a hybrid event dealing with the presentation of IPOS, as a scientific keystone supporting sustainable ocean policies. EurASctook part to this event. (See HERE)

So, IPOS is now preparing the Science conference of the United Nation Ocean Conference to be held in Nice in June 2025 where IPOS will be officialy created under umbrella of the United Nations. Our academy will take part in this conference.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Boris Zemva, Professor at the University of Ljubljana and Director of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Technology at the Jozef Stefan Institute (IJS) in Slovenia. He was recognised throughout the world as one of the best scientists in the inorganic fluorine chemistry, high-energy oxidizers and coordination compounds with noble gas fluorides as ligands. His worldwide reputation has allowed his research group at the IJS to rise to the forefront of laboratories working with fluorine and fluorinated materials. Prof. Zemva was an EurASc Fellow since 2010, member of ou Chemistry Division.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

The European Academy of Sciences is deeply concerned by the recent violence in the Middle East and condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the brutal terrorist attack that Israelis suffered and stands up in support of our Israeli scientific colleagues.  We are shocked and appalled by the atrocious violence that has been perpetrated by the terrorists against Israeli citizens.  We are also concerned by the tragic situation of the civil population in Gaza, and we encourage the international community to urgently develop a humanitarian solution. 

Our thoughts are with all victims on both sides of this conflict.

Join us this October 25-27 for the “Science in the Social Arena: How to Secure Public Credibility?” conference at ZiF, organized by Prof. Martin Carrier, Head of Social Sciences and Humanities EurASc Division.

The conference aims to address the relationship between science and society, specifically the lack of credibility of science in parts of the public. We’re bringing together professionals and working scientists to reflect on the issue and debate possible reasons for the declining reputation of more practice-driven branches of science.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the conversation and help bridge the gap between science and society.

Public Credibility of Science

The conference is supposed to address the relationship between science and society. The intention is to bring together professional reflection on science and the expertise of working scientists. The more specific issue is the lack of credibility of science in parts of the public. We intend to debate possible reasons or causes of the declining reputation of more practice-driven branches of science. One of the traditional suspects is the commercialization and politicization of science: society shapes science such that its original culture of research is compromised. An opposite argument focuses on the growing interference of science in social matters. A contentious field is scientific policy advice, where critics claim that scientists have taken the lead and pushed elected representatives of the people to the margins. Third, trustworthiness needs to be earned by sound justification procedures. We seek to discuss conditions of justification as they arise in practice-driven fields. Methodological and institutional questions are supposed to take center stage. The fourth topical block is science communication. We want to focus on methodological virtues of science and explore ways to convey the spirit of scientific methods to critics.

Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier  – 2023 Physics Nobel Prize laureates

The European Academy of Sciences is thrilled to share that two of its members, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier, have been named among the 2023 Nobel Laureates in Physics for their groundbreaking work in generating attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter. 

Additionally, Pierre Agostini was also honored for his contributions to this field. 

We are proud to have such innovative and accomplished individuals among our membership.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.”
 
The 2023 Nobel Prize laureates in physics are being recognised for their experiments, which have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules. Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy.
 
The laureates’ contributions have enabled the investigation of processes that are so rapid they were previously impossible to follow.
 
There are potential applications in many different areas. In electronics, for example, it is important to understand and control how electrons behave in a material. Attosecond pulses can also be used to identify different molecules, such as in medical diagnostics.

First International Forum on Advanced Materials and Intelligent Manufacturing 

In the frame of the conference Advanced Materials and Intelligent Manufacturing Forum, organized under the auspicious of the Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, the EurASc delegation composed of the president, the vice president and the heads of Materials, Chemistry and Life Science Divisions met with members of CAS, as well with EurASc fellow, Professor Alan Lau, president of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong.

During the forum, there was opportunity to introduce EurASc to all attendees, including high-ranking authorities of the university and of the province.

The topics of the talks given by EurASc members were:

 

  • Responsible electronics beyond silicon (R. Martins);
  • Nanomaterials for Advanced Energy; electronics and Photonics Applications (A. Tressaud); 
  • Metal Ligant cooperativity in molecular chemistry (P. Braunstein); 
  • Intelligent Biomaterials: How nature can be transformed or mimicked for Revolutionary Medical and Energy Applications (D. Scherman);
  • Multifunctional Materials for Emerging Technologies (F. Rosei).

Wree invited a total of 12 academicians from the European Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering to participate. They delivered speeches and exchanged views with local industrialists, researchers and engineers on their areas of expertise. Many constructive cooperation ideas and will follow up on to create better synergies between European countries and China.

Clifford Paterson Medal and Lecture – Winner 2024

Professor Mohan Edirisinghe OBE, FREng, University College London awarded by The Royal Society with Clifford Paterson Medal and Lecture 2024 for seminal research in engineering science of making small structures from soft matter in novel scalable ways, creating new frontiers in functional applications causing major advances in manufacturing and healthcare.

The Clifford Paterson Medal and Lecture is given for outstanding contributions in the field of engineering. The lectureship was originally endowed by The General Electric Company in memory of Clifford Paterson FRS, who founded the GEC Research Laboratories in 1919. Originally the lectures were given on electrical science and technology but this was later broadened to any aspect of engineering. The first lecture was given in 1975. The medal is of bronze, is awarded biennially and is accompanied by a gift of £2,000.

A high-level Scientific Forum on “Advanced Materials and Intelligent Manufacturing” will take place in Henan (Zhengzhou), China, on September 23-25, 2023. 

The purpose of this workshop, jointly organized by the Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, the Technological Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) and European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) is to enhance research collaboration and knowledge exchange between European countries and China, including Hong Kong, in the areas of advancedmaterials, new energy materials, intelligent manufacturing, biomaterials, data science, etc. Besides EurASc President and Vice-President, the Heads of the Scientific Committees of Chemistry, Materials Science and Medicine and Life Sciences Divisions will participate to this international levent.

Professor Rodrigo Martins honoured with the degree of Honorary Professor

Professor Rodrigo Martins honoured with the degree of Honorary Professor

Rodrigo Martins, President of EurASc, full professor and researcher at the Department of Materials Science at NOVA FCT, was recently honoured with the degree of Honorary Professor by Wuhan Technical University (China) and the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

These two institutions are among the most prestigious in China. The Institute of Materials at Wuham University is the best in the field of materials among the 4500 institutes in the country and the fifth best institute in China. The Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is considered the second best in all of China in the field of Sciences.

This distinction recognises the academic and research merit of the professor, who has published more than 700 papers during his career and has won more than 14 international and national awards and distinctions for his work over the past 10 years.

In addition to being a professor at NOVA FCT, Rodrigo Martins is Director of the Centre of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronic Processes of the Institute for the Development of New Technologies (CEMOP/UNINOVA) and President of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) and past President of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS).
